While teaching in the Temple the Pharisees were gathered around. Jesus put to them this question, “What is your opinion about the Christ? How can the scribes and the people maintain that the Christ is the son of David? Whose son is he?” They told him, “David's.” He said to them, “Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, calls him Lord, where he says in the Book of Psalms: Yahweh declared to my Lord, “Take your seat at my right hand, until I have made your enemies your footstool.” (Psalm 110:1) “If David himself calls him Lord, how then can he be his son?” No one could think of anything to say in reply, the great crowd listened to him with delight, and from that day, no one dared to ask him any further questions.
